STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team posted their second 7-0 win of the spring season, beating the Providence Friars at home on Wednesday afternoon in Storrs. The Huskies improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 against BIG EAST teams this season with the win.
"This was a solid win for the team today," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We had another good doubles performance, with all three teams playing focused today. We carried that momentum into our singles matches, and it showed winning all six of the first sets. From there, the team picked up steam and never looked back with wins on all six courts. I'm happy with the way the players competed and stayed focused in all of their matches today."
Doubles continued to be a big strength for the Huskies, taking the opening point for the 11th-straight match. UConn swept all three matches to get the match started. The freshman-sophomore duo of Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) and Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) opened the season losing their first two matches but have now run off 10-straight wins after beating Mimi Dailey and Emmie Lindolm, 6-0, at No. 3 today.
Junior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) stayed unbeaten at 11-0 and clinched the opening point by posting a 6-2 win over Julia Migliorini and Haley Gurski in the top-spot. Sophomores Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) and Denise Lai (Setuaket, N.Y.) made it a clean sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Takunyaci improved to a team-best 8-3 on the season and won her third-straight by beating Daily, 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 5. Karamyshev ran her team-best winning streak to five-straight singles matches by posting a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Lindolm. Bou picked-up her seventh win at the No. 1 position by beating Migliorini, 6-2 and 6-3.
Hoppe posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gurski at No. 2 and Cook was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No.3 over Katie Mulvey. Lai competed the sweep at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vannelie Melendez.
The Huskies are scheduled to close the regular season on Friday hosting Rhode Island on their home courts in Storrs.
