STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team picked-up their second straight win on the week, knocking off Seton Hall, 5-2, in their first match against a BIG EAST opponent this spring season. The Huskies improve to 6-3 on the year.
"This was our first Big East Conference match, and it was great to start off with a solid win," commented Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "The team came out and continued to play great doubles, with wins on all three courts. Each team was focused from the start, and our movement around the net today was excellent."
UConn's dominance in doubles play continued on Friday as the Huskies won the opening point for the eighth-straight match. The team of junior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) remained undefeated at 8-0 this season playing at the No. 1 spot, beating Arina Gumerova and Minja Gligic, 6-2.
At No. 2, sophomores Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, ) posted a 6-3 win and the tandem of sophomore Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Aleksandra Karamyshev (C, Md.) made it a clean sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 3.
"In singles, we had really strong performances from Hoppe, Cook, and Lai," stated Marshall. "They each were sharp from the start, and really set the tone with straight set victories. Bou and Takunyaci each lost in in the 10-point tiebreaker which decided the third set, since we had already clinched the match."
UConn got a default win at No. 6 singles and closed out the match by winning at the No. 2 through 4 spots in the lineup. Hoppe posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Aina Plana Ventosa. Cook won 6-2, 6-2 over Hiba El Khalifi at No. 3, earning her fifth singles win of the year. Lai closed it out by posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Emily O'Donovan at No. 4.
"I am really happy with the team and their performance today; it was a very good conference victory." The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday, April 7 when they host Merrimack in Storrs at 3 pm.
