Huskies Blank Merrimack for Third-Straight Win

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team picked-up their third-straight win in the first match on their outdoor courts on Campus this spring, dealing Merrimack a 7-0 loss on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 7-3 overall on the season with the win.
The Huskies continued to dominate in doubles play, sweeping all three matches to grab the doubles point for the ninth-straight match. The team of junior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) reamained perfect playing together, raising their record to 9-0 on the season with a 6-2 win over Allyson Nerf and Rosemary Campanella at No. 1.
The tandem of sophomore Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) improved to 8-2 on the season with a 6-1 win over Nikala Tuffanelli and Hope Salts at No. 3. Sophomores Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) grabbed a 7-6 (6) win over Kristina Calistro and M. Johnson Campana and improve to 7-2 on the season.
In singles, the freshmen Hoppe and Karamyshev both picked-up their third-straight wins. Hoppe won at No. 2 over Campanella, 6-4 and 6-0. Karamyshev posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Roberta Marcos at No. 6. Bou improved to 6-3 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Nerf. Takunyaci won her No. 5 match with Hope Salts, 6-4 and 6-0 to also improve to 6-3. Lai got a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 and Cook won when her oppoenent was forced to retire in the first set to complete the sweep.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they host BIG EAST opponent Villanova at 11 am on campus.
