STORRS, Conn. – UConn sophomore Kyra Place (Enola, Pa.) scored a career-high six goals, none bigger than the game-winner with 12 seconds left in overtime to lift the Huskies to a 15-14 win over Georgetown in a BIG EAST match-up Friday afternoon at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs.
The Huskies get their 10th win on the season, improving to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the BIG EAST with the win. The Hoyas fall to 6-8 and 5-4 in the league. Both teams, headed to the BIG EAST Tournament, will wrap up the regular season on Sunday when they close their series at 12 noon at Morrone Stadium.
UConn was without top-scorer, senior Sydney Watson (Prince Fredrick, Md.) who was out with injury so the Huskies needed to find other scoring options offensively. UConn, the highest scoring team in the BIG EAST, found a way with seven different Huskies putting a goal on the board led by Place's six.
Junior Lia LaPrise (Windsor, Conn.) scored three times and picked-up a pair of assists while senior Olivia Troy (Westport, Conn.) scored twice.
Georgetown got three goals apiece from Michaela Bruno and Annabelle Albert while goaltender Emily Gaven turned in a 14 save effort. The Hoyas burst out to a 4-0 lead in the game and held the Huskies off the scoreboard for the first 10 minutes. UConn began to climb back in and answered with four-straight of their own, capped by Sam McKenna's (Fayetteville, N.Y.) goal at 7:36.
Place scored twice in the closing 1:13 of the first half to send the game to the break tied up at 7-7. Out of halftime, the Huskies kept the hot hand and ripped off four-straight goals over the first six minutes. LaPrise scored twice followed by Place's fourth and Troy's first to give UConn its biggest lead of the day at 11-7 with 24:08 left.
Georgetown regrouped and pulled within a goal four-times before finally tying it up in the final minute. Coming off a time-out, Albert produced the tying goal with 55 seconds left. Georgetown won the ensuing draw but turned it over giving UConn a shot at the win in the closing seconds but a pair of shots sailed wide as time expired.
In the overtime, both teams turned it over twice before UConn got possession in the Hoya zone and used a time-out with 55 seconds left. Gaven got a stop on Troy with 26 seconds left but UConn retained possession and Place got the game-winner driving to the left post with 12 ticks left.
UConn junior goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) made 10 saves to earn the win. Georgetown held a 20-11 edge on draws.
