Huskies Close Weekend at SCSU Meet

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a strong showing on Friday at the South Florida Invitation, the UConn men's track & field team sent a limited squad down to the Wilton Wright Invitational at Southern Connecticut State University to close out the weekend on Saturday.
"We had a solid weekend," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "We had to fight some windy conditions today, it was tough on the performances. I thought we made good, competitive progress and our quality and depth is growing with each time out."
The Huskies finished second in the seven-team field with a limited roster. UConn got seven wins on Saturday and saw a new school record set in the 300 meter dash.
On the track...
- Sophomore Joseph O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led a one-two-three finish in the 200 meters, getting his first career win in the 200. O'Brien clocked in at 21.44 seconds to lead the group. Junior Aaron Hackett (Upper Marlboro, Md.) was second in 22.01 and sophomore Conor Mahony was third in 22.25 seconds.
- In the 1,500, senior Joshua Bedard (Tolland, Conn.) was the winner and came up with a new PR in the event, posting a time of 3:54.31. Sophomore Marzio Mastrioianni (Branford, Conn.) was second in 3:56.06 and freshman Austen Hutchens (Guilford, Conn) was fourth in 4:00.20.
- Freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, N.J.) got his first collegiate win in the 110-meter hurdles, winning with a time of 14.31 seconds. Classmate Donovan Wright (Burlington, Conn.) was fourth and had a new PR with a time of 15.04 seconds.
- There was a new school record set in the 300-meter dash as Caleb Owen (New Haven, Conn.) won the race with a 34.55 second clocking.
- Freshman Alec Sauter (Tolland) was a first-time winner in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:48.02.
- The 4x400 team of Hutchens, senior Omar Gebril (North Haven, Conn.), Wright and Sauter won with a time of 3:24.55.
- Junior Josiah Thompson (Jamaica, N.Y.) took second place in the 100-meter dash posting a time of 10.88 seconds. He was followed by freshman Richmond Kwaateng (Lowell, Mass.) and Mahonyin third and fourth with times of 10.92 seconds and 11.06 seconds.
In the field…
- Junior Kevin Cetin (Massapequa, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate win in the hammer throw and did so with a new PR. Cetin topped the field with a toss of 53.83 meters to grab the win.
- In the long jump, senior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) took second in the long jump with a leap of 7.11 meters.
- In the pole vault, senior Devon McShane (Madison, Conn.) and senior Marc DeLuca (Stamford, Conn.) where second and third, respectively, both clearing the height of 4.70 meters.
- Freshman Tyler Lyon (Albuquerque, N.M.) posted a pair of PRs in the shot put (14.45m) and the discus (39.36m).
