Huskies Back Home to Host UConn Dog Fight
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn track & field teams return home to the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex this weekend to host their second meet of the outdoor season this weekend. The women will compete on Friday, April 9 and the men will be in action on Saturday, April 10.
This weekend's meet will be a scored meet and fans can follow the live results HERE. Both Husky teams won their first home earlier this season, the UConn Spring Invite. The Huskies will be welcoming UAlbany, Northeastern, Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut State to campus for this weekend's event.
"Albany, Northeastern, and URI are three of the better programs in the northeast." stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "From a team perspective, this is pretty much the 'neighborhood meet' for the northeast, so we want to take care of business."
For the second-straight week, the Huskies enter the weekend as the No. 1 ranked team in the Northeast Region in the USTFCCCA Regional rankings. Northeastern, URI and Albany hold down the No. 2 through 4 spots, in that order.
"There should be some great competition out there," stated Roy. "The men's 400 is probably spotlighted. For us we are looking at Noah, Wellington, our indoor record holder, and Safir, lining up. Should be a great race."
Junior Noah Woodman (Hampstead, N.H.) owns the top-time in the BIG EAST in the 400 this season, last week's 46.60 showing at USF while senior Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.) has the second fastest time after a 47.21 his first time out at home two weeks ago. Junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) will run his first 400 meters this season and is the program's record holder for the 400 meters indoors (46.47). He owns the fastest time in the 400 hurdles (51.70) in the conference.
Senior Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.), a NCAA Championship participant in cross country, will make his track debut this weekend in the 1,500 meters.Â
In the field events, sophomore Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) is this week's BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week after winning the pole vault at the USF South Florida Invitational meet. Snyder won with a height of 5.20 meters, his top vault outdoors in his young UConn career. He is currently 32nd nationally and No. 1 in the BIG EAST in the event.Â
"We are putting everyone out there this weekend," said Roy. "No one is sitting out. This may not be our eventual championship lineup, but it may be pretty close. Should be a great meet and we are really looking forward to it."
