Varsity Four Wins Grand Final

ROME, N.Y. – The UConn women's rowing team concluded its 2021 regular season on the Erie Canal, racing against Colgate, Lehigh and Marist Saturday afternoon for a final tune-up before the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) Championships.
The Huskies had four boats competing on the day and were led by the Varsity Four who posted the top finish in their respective Grand Final. The regatta was split up into two sessions, with results from the morning heats determining which teams would compete in the Grand and Petite finals.
"Today's races were a great opportunity for growth," said associate head coach Allyson Zoppa. "With each crew racing twice, they were all able to set goals and improve upon them in their second races."Â
After besting the Marist Varsity Four in the morning heat by almost 10 seconds, UConn's Varsity Four boat earned a spot in the afternoon Grand Final against Marist's 2V4. The Huskies cruised to the win and crossed the finish line at 8:00.9 – 11 seconds before the Red Fox boat.
UConn's Varsity Eight boat (6:54.9) beat out Colgate to win the V8 Petite Final, edging out the Raiders by a second. The Huskies Second and Third Varsity Eight battled in the 2V8 Petite Final - the 2V8 notched a time of 7:09.6 while the 3V8 finished with a 7:57.6 mark.
"Our varsity four had two wins today and we're excited to see their speed developing," Zoppa said. "The Varsity Eight had a close race with Colgate which made for an exciting afternoon match-up."
The Huskies are idle this week as the student-athletes prepare to take final exams. They return to the water on May 16th when UConn will compete at its first-ever CAA Rowing Championship in Cherry Hill, NJ after officially joining the league back in December of 2019. Northeastern has defended the CAA title for six consecutive seasons.Â
