Huskies Go 1-1 to Start Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The UConn volleyball team started the 2021 season going 1-1 in the first day of the Syracuse Tournament Friday. The Huskies beat Albany in five sets before falling to Syracuse in three.
UConn 3, Albany 2 (25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 32-30, 15-3)
The Huskies came from down 2-1 in the match to win their season opener over the Great Danes. Senior Caylee Parker led UConn with 17 kills while senior Kennadie Jake-Turner and junior Allie Garland added 13 each. Sophomore Taylor Pannell made eight total blocks.
In their UConn debuts, graduate student McKayla Wuensch and junior Karly Berkland led the match in assists (32) and digs (24), respectively.
The Huskies won the first set, 25-19, before falling behind in the next two sets. In a back-and-forth fourth set, UConn came out on top in extra points, 32-30. The Huskies used a dominant 15-3 fifth set win, which included 11 straight points, to take the match.
UConn 0, Syracuse 3 (18-25, 21-25, 20-25)
The Huskies fell to the host Orange in straight sets in the second match of the day. Parker again led UConn in kills (9) while Wuensch made 21 assists and led the team with nine digs.
Syracuse used a 6-0 run in the middle of the first set to pull away from UConn. The Orange had a similar run in the second, but the Huskies were able to climb back. Syracuse reached set points at 24-17, but UConn forced five set points before the Orange were able to close the set. The teams stayed evenly matched in the third, but Syracuse pulled ahead in the last eight points to win the match.
The Huskies return to action on the second day of the Syracuse Tournament against Buffalo on Saturday at 3 p.m.
