FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – After one of the most successful seasons in UConn history, which included a BIG EAST Championship and an NCAA Regional appearance, the UConn men's golf team is ready to continue its trajectory of success.
The Huskies, with a solid nucleus of veterans returning and an influx of talented freshmen, open the 2021-22 campaign on Saturday, competing in the Doc Gimmler Invitational, sponsored by St. John's University, at the Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Led by its two All-BIG EAST First Team selections of last season, senior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) and sophomore Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.), who was also the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, UConn will play five events during the fall portion of its 2021-22 schedule.
Joining Manuel and Nelson in UConn's lineup for the Gimmler Invitational will be sophomore Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), senior Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.), and freshman Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.). Junior Logan Broyles (Mendon, Vt.) will be playing as an individual.
The Doc Gimmler Invitational is a three-round event, with two rounds scheduled for Saturday and the final round on Sunday, all on the par-70, 7,092-yard Bethpage Red Course. Besides UConn and host school St. John's, the 14-team field also includes Iona, Towson, Lafayette, Colgate, Lehigh, Hofstra, Columbia, Yale, Navy, Harvard, Villanova and Holy Cross.
UConn is coming off a 2021 spring schedule that included six Top Five finishes, and in five of those, the Huskies finished either first or second. In their first season back in the BIG EAST Conference in seven years, they won the school's first BIG EAST title since 1994 and went to the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional.
The Huskies will follow this weekend's event by competing in the Hartford Hawks Invitational on Sept. 20-21 at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, Conn. UConn will then be the host school for the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse on Oct. 3-5 at GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass.
