Volleyball Coasts Past Lafayette, 3-0, in Home Opener

STORRS, Conn. - Contending in Gampel Pavilion for its home opener, the UConn volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-14, 27-25, 25-16) over Lafayette on Friday night.
Senior Caylee Parker notched a game-high 12 kills for the Huskies, while graduate student McKayla Wuensch provided 32 assists, and junior Karly BerklandĀ led all players with 14 digs.
UConn took advantage of 11 aces compared to four from Lafayette. Furthermore, the Huskies limited the Leopards to a .167 hitting percentage en route to improving to 2-2 on the season.
The HuskiesĀ started the match with a 9-3 run and kept the pressure on, led by Parker's six killsĀ as the Huskies compiled a .483 kill percentage throughout the first set.
UConnĀ continued to stroke the hot hand as it started the second frameĀ with seven kills to pull ahead, 7-2. Lafayette battled back to knot the score at 25-all, but a Leopard error followed by aĀ block via the duo of Parker and senior Kennadie Jake-Turner secured the second set.
Lafayette and UConn went neck-and-neck to start the third stanzaĀ through the first six points. Looking for the sweep, the Huskies used a trio of aces to swing the momentum to edge out aĀ 12-8 advantage before three consecutive blocks midway through the set put the game out of reach.
The UConn Challenge continues tomorrow with four matches on the docket forĀ Saturday, Sept. 4. The Huskies will be in action against Central Connecticut State University at 12:30 p.m. before taking on Rutgers in the challenge finale at 7 p.m.
