UConn's Van Der Els Breaks Mile Record at BU

BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn men's track and field team wrapped up their weekend of competition with a handful of athletes taking part in the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University on Sunday. The event was moved from Saturday to Sunday due to the snowstorm in the region. It was an unscored meet.
In the mile, senior Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) set a new PR and school record for the second week in a row at BU's indoor track, clocking in at 3:58.76 on Sunday.
UConn junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) ran the 400 meters for the first time this indoor season and grabbed the win on Sunday with a time of 46.89 seconds. He has also earned wins this season in the 500 and 600 meters.
Classmate Markus Bagley (Jersey City, N.J.) had a great finish in the 400, taking sixth place in the field with a time of 48.45 seconds.
Sophomore Stephen Sutton (Tolland, Conn.) was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.77. Classmate Marzio Mastroianni (Branford, Conn.) took 10th at 1:50.66, a new PR by just over two seconds.
In the 3,000 meters, sophomore Kevin Cawley (Massapequa, N.Y.) set a big PR, clocking an 8:06.57 with his previous top time at 8:45.93. Junior James Maniscalco (Fairfield, Conn.) also set a new PR with a time of 8:18.44.
Senior Christopher Keegan (West Hartford, Conn.) took sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 18.25 meters.
The Huskies return to action next weekend Dr. Sander Invite and Columbia Challenge.
