Huskies Drop to DePaul, 3-1

CHICAGO – Senior Kennadie Jake-Turner led the match with 13 kills as the UConn volleyball team (6-9, 0-4 BIG EAST) fell to DePaul (6-10, 2-2) in four sets (15-25, 25-14, 23-25, 24-26) Saturday evening in McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Seniors Caylee Parker (10 kills, 13 digs) and Madi Whitmore (44 assists, 11 digs) each finished with double-doubles. Junior Taylor Pannell had six blocks while senior Allie Garland had five.
Senior Jasmine Davis had four kills in the first set. The teams started the match trading points, but DePaul used a 6-2 run to pull ahead, 15-8. Parker added a couple late-set kills, but the Blue Demons held on to finish the set, 25-15.
The UConn defense locked down in the second set, holding DePaul to a .063 hitting percentage. The Huskies had five total blocks in the set and senior Aset Baker-Falealili served two aces as UConn controlled the tempo. The Huskies used a 4-0 run to pull ahead, 17-10. Late DePaul errors helped UConn to a 25-14 second set win.
The third and fourth sets were each decided by just two points as the Huskies and Blue Demons battled. In the third, the teams tied 13 times and the lead changed five times. Parker and Jake-Turner led the offense in the third. Whitmire served as ace to put UConn ahead, 18-15. The Blue Demons used a 6-1 run out of a timeout to take the lead, 21-20. Jake-Turner and Parker combined for a block to tie the set at 23-23, but DePaul notched two straight to take the set.
DePaul took a 19-14 lead midway through the fourth, but UConn fought back. Jake-Turner and Parker had kills before Davis knocked down three straight. A Husky block and a DePaul error helped UConn pull within one, 23-22. Davis and Parker had kills to tie the set at 24-24, but the Blue Demons were able to score two points on their home court to close the match.
The Huskies return to Gampel Pavilion next weekend to host Creighton on Friday and Xavier on Saturday.
