Huskies In Second Place After Round 1 Of Invitational

HAMPDEN, Mass. – Led by an impressive 1-over par 73 by sophomore Trevor Lopez in extremely windy conditions, the UConn men's golf team sits in second place after the first round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) birdied all four of the Par 5 holes at GreatHorse to tie for fourth place and lead the Huskies to an aggregate 16-over, 304 on the first day of the tournament, three strokes behind first-round leader St. John's (301).
Defending tournament champion Rhode Island (305), Seton Hall (305) and Lafayette (305) are in a three-way tie for third. The rest of the 14-team field, in order, includes LIU (307), Rider (309), Fairleigh Dickenson (316), Xavier (317), Hartford (318), Siena (318), Bryant (318), Iona (319) and Saint Joseph's (332).
Besides Lopez, UConn grad student Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) and sophomore Eric Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) each shot a 4-over 76 to tie for 18th place. Freshman Colin Spencer (Mashpee, Mass.) was tied for 35th place after shooting a 7-over 79, and junior Jimmy Paradise was tied for 43rd place with an 8-over 80.
Five Huskies are also playing in the tourney as individuals and three of them are among the top seven after Sunday's first round. Junior Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) is tied with Lopez for fourth place with a 1-over 73, while senior Logan Broyles (Mendon, Vt.) and freshman Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) were part of a tie for seventh place, each with a 2-over, 74. Also playing as individuals, freshman Christopher Sacher (Schoeffengrund, Hesse, Germany) is tied for 52nd with a 9-over 81, and sophomore Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.) is tied for 61st place with a 10-over 82.
Rhode Island's Brandon Gillis and Rider's Rick Van Der Nat were the only two players in the 78-player field to break par on Sunday, each shooting a 1-under 71 to lead the tournament.
The UConn Invitational continues with Round 2 on Monday and concludes with Round 3 on Tuesday.
