Huskies Wrap Solid Showing at ITA Regional

HANOVER, NH – The UConn women's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA Regional Championship held at Dartmouth College this weekend.
"The team had a very successful weekend at the Regional Championships at Dartmouth this weekend," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "This event features the top players from the all over the east coast Division I schools. We had four singles players qualify, and two doubles teams. Overall, we had a 7-6 record, with several quality wins."
The doubles team of sophomores Olivia Wright (Glen Allen, VA) and Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) won a pair of matches, opening with an 8-4 win over Niagara's Elena Mayet and Mercedes Velaco. The duo then knocked off a ranked team from BC, Seren Agar and Muskan Mahajan, 8-4. The two were knocked out in the round of 16 by a seeded Syracuse team.
Sophomore Maria Constantinou (Nicosia, Cyprus) got her tournament started with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Flavia Rambaldi of Sacred Heart. She moved on to the round of 32 with a 2-6, 6-3 and 10-4 win over BU's Erica Di Battista. She saw her run end there with a tough 7-6 (3), 6-4 loss to Shiori Ito. Wright won her opening match against Vialina Gould of Villanova in a three-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7 and 13-11. She lost her next match to Basak Akbas of Buffalo, 3-6, 7-5 and 10-6.
Junior Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, MD) got a win over Laia Giralt of Siena in her opening match before falling in the round of 64. Sophomore Nansi Toskova (Montreal, Quebec) won her first match of the tournament, beating Lily Peter from Stonehill, 6-1, 6-0 but also falling the next round.
Constantinou and Toskova teamed for a win in the doubles bracket, beating Yale's Sophia Zaslow and Ann Wright Guerry, 8-7 (2) before falling in the next round.
"I was very pleased with all of these results from the tournament," stated Marshall. "It shows the depth and talent of our team this year, and I am excited to see their progress continue in our upcoming tournaments."
The Huskies will be back on the courts at the Princeton Invitational on October 14-16.
