STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team beat the DePaul Blue Demons 1-0 Saturday night at the newly named Ray Reid Field at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Sophomore Okem Chime scored the Huskies lone goal to give UConn their second straight conference win.
UConn was dominant in the first half outshooting the Blue Demons 13-0. Nicolas Tomerius had the Huskies first shot in the 7th minute, but his attempt was wide of the goal. Three minutes later Tomerius put UConn's first shot on goal, testing the DePaul goalkeeper, but his shot was saved.
Scott Testori nearly gave the Huskies the lead in the 13th minute as Bjorn Nikolajewski found a loose ball from a UConn corner kick. He served a perfect cross right to the head of Testori, but his header was just over the crossbar by inches.
The Huskies finally found a breakthrough in the 24th minute as Chime capitalized on a turnover by the Blue Demons defense. Chime was able to track down the bad pass and found himself with the ball in the DePaul box. Surrounded by defenders Chime did very well burying the ball in the bottom corner with his left foot. This is Chime's third goal of the season.
UConn did not take their foot off the gas pedal as they got six more shots after the Chime goal. In the 31stminute Frantz Pierrot had a header on goal that was saved by the DePaul goalkeeper. Eli Conway beat two DePaul defenders down to the right flank with pace and served a cross right to Pierrot, but the keeper did well to keep it a one goal game. Mateo Leveque had UConn's last chance of the half in the 45th minute with a shot on his right foot but once again the DePaul goalkeeper made a great save.
Much of the second half was played in the middle of the park as UConn controlled possession to ice the shutout win. UConn's goalkeeper Michael Stone was called into action as DePaul threw numbers forward searching for a goal. Stone earned his second straight shutout as the Huskies did not surrender a goal against Villanova earlier this week.
