STORRS, Conn. – The No. 6 UConn women's basketball team (1-0) hosts No. 3 Texas (1-0) in a top-10 matchup on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion. The game will air on FS1 and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (97-9 ESPN).
The Huskies will retire UConn legend Swin Cash's No. 32 ahead of the game. Fans should plan on being in their seats by 6 p.m. for the ceremony. Cash was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in September, the criteria to have a number retired by UConn basketball. Cash led UConn to the 2000 and 2002 NCAA Championships. She went on to win three WNBA Championships, two Olympic gold medals and a FIBA World Championship.
Swin Cash will be just the second UConn women's basketball player to have her number in the rafters after Rebecca Lobo (50).
UConn opened the 2022-23 season with a 98-39 win over Northeastern last Thursday. Sophomore Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 26 points. Fudd made just one three pointer but went 8-for-9 inside the arc and 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Fudd also set a career high with six steals. Junior Aaliyah Edwards (14 points, 12 rebounds and graduate student Dorka Juhász (14 points, 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles.
UConn is 9-0 all-time vs. Texas. This is only the Longhorns' second time playing at UConn, and the team's first time in Gampel Pavilion. One current member of the UConn team has played against Texas. Grad transfer Lou Lopez Sénéchal faced the Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament while with Fairfield last season. Lopez Sénéchal had 17 points and five rebounds against Texas.
The Huskies haven't faced Texas since 2018, but the team is familiar with one Longhorn. Graduate transfer Sonya Morris previously played at BIG EAST foe DePaul.
Texas started the season with a 68-45 win over Louisiana on Friday. Taylor Jones led the team with 21 points. Texas was picked to finish second in the Big 12 in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. Sophomores Rori Harmon and Aaliyah Moore were named Preseason All-Big 12. Head coach Vic Schaefer is in his third season at Texas.
