STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team fell to the Georgetown Hoyas 1-0 Wednesday night at Ray Reid Field at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. With the loss the Huskies fell just short of a bid in the BIG EAST Tournament finishing the regular season in seventh place on twelve points, just a point shy of sixth place Creighton.
UConn put together a solid performance against the first place Hoyas, controlling much of the possession in the match, and outshooting Georgetown 16-5. The Huskies had their first big chance of the game in the 12thminute as Kai Griese served a cross right to Mateo Leveque, but his volley went over the crossbar. Sophomore Okem Chime had an effort on goal in the 41st minute that was saved by the Hoyas goalkeeper to keep it scoreless into the halftime break. UConn had the bulk of the chances in the opening half outshooting Georgetown 13-2.
Georgetown scored the game's only goal in the 61st minute off a deflection in front of goal. This is the first goal UConn has given up since October 15th at Marquette.
In the 63rd minute Eli Conway forced the Hoyas goalkeeper to make another great save preventing the Huskies equalizer. The freshman blasted a shot with his left foot that was on target for the bottom corner of the goal, but the goalkeeper got his hand to it. Scott Testori would have UConn's best chance of the game in the 88th minute off a header inside the box. Leveque swung in a corner kick right to the head of Testori whose header seemed destined for the back of the net but was denied once again by the Hoyas goalkeeper.
"I thought it was a great performance from the group tonight," said head coach Chris Gbandi. "I thought we dominated the game but give credit to Georgetown, they found a way to get a goal when they needed it most. I was proud of the group and the way they worked and the intensity they played with, just so unfortunate that we couldn't get a result tonight to prolong our season."
UConn finishes the 2022 season at 7-7-3 and 3-4-3 in the BIG EAST.
