STORRS, Conn. – The UConn track and field program will split their squads up this weekend to take part in a pair of meets, heading to New York City's historic Armory for the Rutgers Open and up to Boston University for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
The Rutgers Open will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 11 and 12, at the historic Armory. The women will compete at the BU meet on Friday while the men head to Boston on Saturday.
"Not too early to start getting excited about the BIG EAST championship in two weeks," commented Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "I thought we had a great team meet on both sides last week and heading into this weekend, we are doing what we need to do at this point in our season. We will have a few athletes sitting out, but it's really a bombs away weekend, especially for our athletes eying spots at the NCAA meet. Looking at the national lists and see where we stand. This is a big weekend for them."
The Huskies will send their field athletes along with sprinters and hurdlers down to New York with the others heading up to BU. The UConn women moved up to No. 3 in the Northeast in this week's USTFCCCA regional rankings.
For the second-straight week, UConn won the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week award as junior Patricia Mroczkowski (Berlin, Conn.) took home this week's honor. Mroczkowski collected her third win in four meets this indoor season, beating the field in the high jump by clearing the bar at 1.80 meters, setting a new personal record. She ranks at the top of the BIG EAST and among the top-20 nationally (19th).
Senior Taylor Woods (Marlboro, Md.) is in 15th in the national rankings in the long jump and is joined by junior Emily Lavarnway (Ovid, N.Y.) who is now 33rd after her performance at last week's Columbia Challenge. Lavarnway competed in her first pentathlon as a Husky, finishing with 3971 points at Columbia and cracking the national rankings at 28th.
On the track, senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) is ranked 21st in the mile after her school record 4:37.45 race at BU two weeks ago. Nahom along with Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario), Raquel Rosa (Waterbury, Conn.) and Elise O'Leary (Milton, Mass.) posted the 14th best time in the country so far in the distance medley relay. The group clocked a 11:15.62 at last week's Columbia Challenge.
