STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team snapped a two-match slide on Friday night by beating Stony Brook, 6-1, at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester. The Huskies even up their dual match record at 2-2 on the year.
UConn opened up by sweeping all three doubles matches en route to the bounc back win. "The team pulled out a great win tonight over a tough Stony Brook squad," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We talked about wanting to get a quick start in doubles today, and we were able to accomplish that on all three courts. It really put us in a great frame of mind going into the singles matches with confidence. From there we won the first set in singles on 5 of the 6 courts."
At No. 1 doubles, the team of senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) got a 6-2 win over Mathilde Sreeves and Loreto Villalba Rubio to get things started. At No. 2, sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) and Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) got a 6-4 win over Chandrika Joshi and Kristine Theys. Closing out the opening sweep was juniors Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) at No. 3 with a 6-3 win.
In singles play, Hoppe got a three-set win at No. 2 over Villalba Rubio, bouncing back from losing the first set 7-6 (10) to win 7-5 and 10-7. Karamyshev won her No. 3 singles match with Joshi, 6-0 and 6-1. Cook went 6-2 and 6-4 over Kristine Theys at No. 4.
Petri Bere was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Sara AnnaMaria Medved at No. 5 and Lai won her No. 6 match with Aradhana Jayakrishna, 6-3 and 6-3.
"I was pleased with the way we closed out games and sets today, making the most of our opportunities when things were close and tense. Julieanne fought through multiple injuries to extend her match to 3 sets, but came up just short in a very close match. It was great to see the effort and fight come through from all of the players tonight, and it propelled us to a great victory."
The Huskies return to the court on Friday, February 25 at LIU.
