BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The UConn women's tennis team lost a hard-fought battle at LIU on Friday, falling 4-3 at the Sportime Bethpage Tennis Center.
"We came up just a few points short today against a very good LIU team," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "The level of play throughout was extremely high from both teams. Julieanne Bou led the way today, with a double win in both doubles and singles. She played a great doubles match with Leonie and carried that momentum into a straight set victory at number one."
The Sharks took the doubles point but UConn's Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) and Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) defeated Valentina Dancenco and Sofiya Kuzina 6-4.
In the singles competition Friday night, the Huskies split the six matches. At the top spot, Bou defeated V. Erechtchenko 7-6, 6-1. At No. 4, Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) defeated Elinor Storkaas 6-4, 6-3 and at No. 6, Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) defeated Kate Jorjoliani 7-5, 6-3.
"Denise rallied from a large deficit in the first set to win in straight sets. And Caroline Cook played a strong two sets for a solid victory at number. Leonie and Aleksandra played very well in singles, both coming up just short in two very close sets for each of them."
"I think the level of play from our players today proves how they are improving and getting stronger week to week."
The Huskies are right back in action on Sunday morning when they face their first BIG EAST opponent of the season in Seton Hall. The match is at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester at 10:30 am.
