STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team picked-up their second-straight win, beating state-rival Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon, 6-1, at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester. The Huskies improved to 4-3 in dual match play.
"This was a nice win over an in-state rival today," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "Sacred Heart has been playing well and getting some solid wins this spring, so we needed to really focus today."
"We had a great start to the day with our doubles play. Each court came out energized and ready to play, which is something we talked about before the match. That momentum carried us into a solid start in the singles."
UConn swept all three doubles matches starting at No. 1 as senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) got their 10th win on the season together, beating Katsiaryna Starastsenka and Ciara O'Toole, 6-2.
Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) and Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) improved to 13-7 on the season with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over Vitalina Golod and Kim Fenton. The team of juniors Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) made it a clean sweep at No. 3 beating Aina Garriga and Renee Sharma, 6-3.
Karamyshev got things rolling in singles play, earning her 12th win on the year by beating Golod at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-3. Bou made it three-straight singles win and grabbed her team-best 13th win by topping Starastenka at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-4.
Cook won her fourth-straight match by beating Garriga at No. 4, 6-3 and 6-1. Hoppe and Petri Bere picked-up their second-straight wins. Hoppe got a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 over O'Toole and Petri Bere won at No. 5 over Fenton, 7-5, 6-2, her 10th win on the year.
"Aleksandra got the first point in singles for the team, and we never looked back after that. Although there were many straight set wins, they were competitive sets, and our kids did a nice job of playing the big points confidently."
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday March 8 with a home match at Magic Lincer Tennis Club against Quinnipiac at 1 pm.
