STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team earned their third-straight win on Tuesday afternoon, taking down in-state rival Quinnipiac, 5-2, at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester.
"This was another solid win for our team over a very good Quinnipiac squad today," commented Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We started with singles today due to a court situation, and it was very close. Caroline and Isabel set the tone with quick, straight set victories to get us off to a nice start. Aleksandra and Denise played well but came up a little short in two close sets each. Julieanne had a nice consistent win at number 1, and Leonie had a come from behind three set victory."
The Huskies got four of the six singles matches as junior Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) rolled to straight-set wins. Cook beat Madison Williams at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-0 and won her fifth-straight match and improved to 6-2 this spring. Petri Bere followed at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jordan Bradley, here third-straight win.
Senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at No. 1 over Kamilla Nella, her fourth-straight win and 14th singles win. Sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) dropped the first set to Dominique Vasile, 6-4, but rebounded to win 7-5 and 6-0.
"Leading 4-2 after singles, we played the doubles winning at number 1 and 2 in close sets," said Marshall.
Petri-Bere and Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) won their No. 2 doubles match 6-4 over Nella and Vasile, improving to 14-7 this season.
"I was very pleased with the effort and fight today, as this was a match that needed focus and attention to detail for a win. The team feels confident with three-straight victories heading into our spring matches in Florida next week."
