LAKELAND, Fla. - The UConn women's tennis team notched their fourth-straight win on the season, grabbing a 4-3 win over Florida Southern in Lakeland, Florida at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Huskies are now 6-3 on the season.
"This was a very nice win over a tough Florida Southern team," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "Since this was our first match outdoors, we knew the conditions were going to be challenging with the wind, sun, and heat. Our kids battled and hung tough, winning a close doubles point to start the match."
UConn opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The team of senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) earned their 11th win together by beating Laura Vetter and Mathilda Vidgren, 6-2, at No. 1 to clinch the point. At No. 3, juniors Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) posted a 6-1 win over Maxima Ellenberg and Flor Salerno.
"In singles we were led by the top of our line up, with J-Bou, Leonie, and Aleksandra winning close matches," said Marshall. Bou won her No. 1 singles match over Vetter, 6-2, 6-4, her fifth-straight win and her 15th singles victory this season. Sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) posted a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Minnie Kim to put UConn up 3-2 in the match and earn her 14th win.
Hoppe clinched the win for the Huskies by winning at No. 2 in three sets. She dropped the first set 6-0 to Vidgren but rebounded to win 7-5 and 6-1, her fourth-straight win and her 13th of the season.
"I was proud of the way we competed and fought today. These are the type of conditions we will face in our outdoor season, so this was a great start in that preparation." The Huskies will hit the courts on Wednesday in Florida, facing Bethune Cookman.
