VILLANOVA, Pa. - The UConn women's tennis team played their final BIG EAST opponent before the postseason tournament on Sunday, falling at Villanova in a tight match, 4-3. The Huskies fall to 8-10 overall and 2-3 against BIG EAST teams.
"This was a heartbreaking loss to Villanova today," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We opened the day with one of our best doubles efforts in weeks. We played to clinch, and our 1 and 2 teams finished first with solid victories to secure the doubles point. Then the singles went out, and we got down by losing the first set on 4 of 6 courts. Both Leonie and Selen were able to win their second sets, but both came up short in the third sets. Isabel and Aleksandra had very nice singles wins in straight sets today. We need to bounce back, and focus on finishing our three set matches with more toughness and grit. We have been well under .500 winning percentage of three set matches in the last few weeks."
The Huskies opened up by winning the doubles point thanks to wins at the top-two spots. The No. 1 team of senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) got a 6-2 win over Annalise Klopfer and Emma Brogan, their 13th win together this season. At No. 2, sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) and freshman Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) notched their team-best 15th double win by beating Valieriia Kornieva and Sabina Grigorian.
Karamyshev continued her winning ways in singles play, grabbing her third-straight victory by beating Brogan at No. 2, 7-6, 7-5. She now has a team-best 17 wins this season. Petri Bere won the other singles match for the Huskies, beating Bella Steffen at No. 5, 7-6, and 6-1, her 15th win.
The Huskies will play their final home match of the season on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Massachusetts at 2:30 pm.
