Softball beats Fairfield 4-1, win 8th straight game

Storrs, CT – Pitching shines as UConn takes down in state foe Fairfield 4-1.

Marybeth Olson got the start in the circle for the Huskies. She pitched a strong five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.

UConn jumped out in front in the first inning. Reese Guevarra scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Huskies.

The Huskies added to the lead in the fourth inning. Briana Marcelino hit a single to right field, scoring Sami Barnett. Erika Coreth came around to score on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0 Huskies.

Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Olson in the sixth. She went one inning for the Huskies.

The Huskies scored another run in the sixth to put the lead at 4-0. Aziah James came around to score on a groundout by Guevarra.

In the sixth inning, Marcelino set the single season stolen base record, recording her 26^th stolen base on the season. The record has been held by Jen Ward for ten years as she stole 25 bases in the 2012 season. Marcelino may have company as two other Huskies are within range to break the record as well this season.

Fairfield got on the board in the seventh, but it was too late for the Stags.

Elise Sokolsky came in relief for O'Neil to close out the win in the seventh. She finished with one strikeout giving the staff nine punchouts on the day.

UConn will be back in action this weekend as they close out the homestand against BIG EAST rival Providence.
