STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's track & field team will host the two-day UConn Northeast Challenge this weekend at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on campus with 22 teams sending student-athletes to compete.
UConn will host athletes from AIC, Albany, Boston University, Brown, Central Connecticut, Colby, Columbia, Dartmouth, Iona, Maine, Massachusetts, MIT, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Saint Francis Brooklyn, Sacred Heart, Southern Connecticut, Stony Brook, Southern Maine, Southern New Hampshire, and Yale as well as unattached competitors as well.
"This is as big a meet, size wise, that we have hosted here maybe ever," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "This is going to be a high-quality meet, with high end competition. We will have some open-athletes as well including a pair of Olympians in Devon Williams in the decathlon and Lisa Wilson in the hammer. It's just incredible and will make for some great competition. And it is a scoring meet, so we will need to rise up to meet the challenge. We are looking forward to it"
The Huskies are coming off appearances at the Joe May Invitational at LSU and Southern Connecticut last weekend and are ranked No. 4 in this week's USTFCCCA Northeast Region Poll. Of the 22 teams coming this weekend's meet, 16 teams are ranked in this week's regional poll.
Junior Patricia Mroczkowski (Berlin, Conn.) earned her fourth-straight BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week honor after her performance last weekend at LSU. Mroczkowski continues her stranglehold on the top field athlete honor with the 10th-best high jump mark in the nation this season. The junior eclipsed the bar at 1.83 meters at the LSU Joe May Invitational, once again setting a personal best.Â
For the second-straight week, freshman Natalia Surdej (Lancaster, N.Y.) posted a new PR in the hammer, recording a throw of 57.77 meters to finish fifth overall at LSU. She is now in the NCAA rankings at 85th in the event.
The two-day meet gets underway on Friday, April 15 with the decathlon and heptathlon. Friday will conclude with he 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meters. Events will continue through the day on Saturday, April 16 starting at 10 am as the decathlon continues. Saturday will conclude with the Huskies honoring the graduation seniors at the conclusion of the meet.
