PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – UConn sophomore Caleb Manuel fired a blistering 6-under par 66 on Tuesday to vault to the top of the individual leaderboard and spearhead the Huskies into a tie for the team lead after the second round of the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship, held at the Mountain View Course at Callaway Gardens.
Manuel's bogey-free round included six birdies and equaled the lowest round of his college career, which he has now shot three times, including in the second round of last year's BIG EAST Championship.
Led by Manuel (Topsham, Me.), sophomore Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) who shot an impressive 2-under 70, and sophomore Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.), who had a solid, even-par 72, UConn tied Seton Hall for the lowest aggregate round of the day with a 5-under 283.
UConn's 287-283=570, equaled Marquette's 281-289=570 to head the 10-team field. Seton Hall's 288-283=571 is third.
Tuesday's results sets the stage for an exciting final round on Wednesday, which will begin with UConn and Marquette tied for the team lead at 6-under par and Seton Hall (-5) just a stroke behind in third place. Creighton (4-over), Georgetown (6-over) and St. John's (8-over) are also within striking distance, with a berth in the NCAA Championship on the line for the winning team. The winning individual, if he is not part of the winning team, will also receive an NCAA bid. UConn is the defending BIG EAST champion.
Manuel, the Huskies' leading scorer and a Second Team All-BIG EAST pick by a vote of the league coaches, leads the 50-player field with a 10-under, 68-66=134, six strokes ahead of a three-way tie for second place. He leads the tournament in birdies with 11, in scoring on the Par 4 holes (-6) and is tied for the lead in scoring on the Par 3 holes (-1).
Dallahan's 2-under, 72-70=142, puts him in a tie for 10th place, while Paradise's even-par, 72-72=144, puts him in a tie for 13th place. Senior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) shot a 7-over, 75-76=151, to tie for 37th place and freshman Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) is in a tie for 41st place after an 8-over, 77-75=152.
UConn and Marquette will tee off for the final round in the same pairing on Wednesday morning, beginning at 9:45 a.m.
