PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The UConn women's tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak with a 4-3 win on the road at BIG EAST foe Providence on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies evened their record at 8-8 and are now 2-1 against BIG EAST opponents.
"This was a nice win over a conference opponent," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "PC played tough and fought hard all the way up until the end. We started off with some very solid doubles. We tried a new pairing today with Selen and Isabel playing together and they had a nice win at #3 doubles. In #2 doubles, Denise and Caroline played very well today and helped clinch the doubles point."
Freshman Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) and junior Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) teamed for a 6-1 win at No. 3 to get things going in doubles play, beating Katie Mulvey and Emmie Lindholm. The Huskies clinched the point with a No. 2 win by Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) who blanked Elisa Davalos and Lauren Carson, 6-0.
"In singles we came out strong, winning 4 of 6 first sets to grab the momentum," said Marshall. "Selen, Aleksandra and Isabel won their matches in that order to get us the 4 points needed for the win. Leonie stepped up to the number one singles spot and lost a close 3 set battle, and Denise also came up just short in a third set tiebreaker."
Takunyaci won her No. 6 singles match with Davalos, 6-2 and 6-1 to get UConn started in singles. Sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No.2 over Julia Migliorini to notch her 15th win of the season. UConn closed out the win with a win from Bere at No. 4, beating Vannelie Melendez, 6-1 and 6-4., her 14th singles win.
"I was pleased with the result and the teams effort today. Now we are all looking forward to the weekend at Georgetown and Villanova for two more conference matches."
