STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's track & field team has a pair of meets on the slate on Saturday with athletes competing at the Joe May Invitational at LSU and the Wilton Wright Invitational at Southern Connecticut State University.
After winning their home opening meet last weekend, the UConn Dog Fight, the Huskies moved up a spot in this week's USTFCCCA Northeast Regional rankings to No. 3. UConn will look to focus on individual performances at this weekend's meets. "This week is about getting out there and seeing where we are at," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "Last week was so good from a team perspective, this is going to be much more individually oriented this weekend. We are focused at LSU on the speed, power group through the 800 and field events. We will have a group of 24 men and 24 women heading down. Looks like great weather, which is great, and there will be some high levels of competition, I mean LSU is the defending national champs on the men's side. So we just want to get out there and compete."Â
Joining the Huskies in Baton Rouge on Saturday will be Alabama, Houston, Kent State, Kentucky, Northwestern State, Ohio State, and Southern Miss. "This is a solid individual checkpoint for us," stated Roy. "With these schools, this level of competition, we will see a lot of athletes who will be at the top of the East Regional down the line. Shows us where we stand and what we are working for."
UConn junior Patricia Mroczkowski (Berlin, Conn.) was tabbed the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week for the third straight week following a high jump mark of 1.80 meters at the UConn Dog Fight. The height leads the BIG EAST and ranks 15th nationally.  In the hammer throw, senior Mikyla Rodgers (South Huntington, N.Y.) was second overall last weekend with a throw of 56.90 meters and enters the national rankings at No. 86.
Junior Emma Chee (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) is coming off her first win of the spring season after taking the top spot in last weekend's home meet. Her top height of 4.05 meters ranks 47th nationally this spring.
The Huskies will return home next weekend to host the two-day UConn Northeast Challenge on Friday and Saturday, April 15-16.
