Chicago, IL – UConn (36-16) is set to face DePaul (28-22) in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday at 12:00pm EST.
The Huskies are coming into the tournament as the one seed after winning the regular season. They have won 17 of their last 20 games coming into the postseason. UConn has gotten contributions up and down the lineup all season long with 8 Huskies having at least 20 runs batted in on the year. As a team, UConn is batting .284, and has a .368 on base percentage, with 37 home runs on the season. They rank at the top of the BIG EAST in almost every offensive statistical category. UConn has been led all year by seniors Briana Marcelino, Reese Guevarra, Sami Barnett, and Olivia Sappington. The four combined have hit 23 of the Huskies 37 home runs and batted in 114 runs.
The pitching staff has held their own in the circle this season. They have a 2.89 era, with 371 strikeouts. They have given up the fewest number of runs in the conference and have pitched nine shutouts this year. The Huskies have a three headed monster in Elise Sokolsky, Meghan O'Neil, and Marybeth Olson that have handled the bulk of the load so far this season. UConn will primarily rely on these three for the three day tournament.
DePaul is coming into the tournament as the four seed and winners in seven of their last ten games. When the Huskies and Blue Demons last met in late March, UConn swept the series. DePaul is led by Brooke Johnson and Kate Polucha who were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
