UConn advances to the BIG EAST Championship

Chicago, IL – UConn takes down DePaul 6-2 to move onto the BIG EAST Championship game tomorrow.
Meghan O'Neil started in the circle for the Huskies. She went the distance going a strong seven innings only giving up two runs and struck out three.
UConn put up a crooked number in the first inning scoring all six of their runs and sent 12 batters to the plate. Jana Sanden got it started with a single to center to score Reese Guevarra. Olivia Sappington and Sami Barnett worked bases loaded walks to plate two runs. Erika Coreth joined the party with a sac fly to center to score Rosie Garcia. The leadoff hitter Briana Marcelino came back to the dish in the first inning working another bases loaded walk for the Huskies to make it 5-0. Guevarra made it six with a shot to third base, moving all the runners up a base and scoring Barnett.
In the third inning Marcelino broke another program record, hitting the 50th double of her career breaking Andrea D'Innocenzo 'previous record of 49 career doubles. D'Innocenzo has held this record for 27 years. She also broke the career total bases record which was previously set by Janna Venice with 366. Venice held the record for almost 30 years.
DePaul got on the board in the third inning scoring two runs trimming the Huskies lead to 6-2. O'Neil did an excellent job of shutting down the Blue Demon lineup after that, only giving up one hit after the third inning.
UConn will square off against Villanova in a rematch of last year's BIG EAST championship game. The Huskies will need to win two games to win the title. Both games will be aired on FS2.
