NEW HAVEN, Conn. – UConn sophomore Caleb Manuel remains in the thick of contention for a prestigious berth in the NCAA Division I Championship next week in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Manuel (Topsham, Me.) fired a second consecutive 2-under par 68 Tuesday in Round 2 of NCAA New Haven Regional at the Yale Golf Course. His tourney total of 68-68=136 puts him among a five-way tie for sixth place in the 75-player field.
More importantly, Manuel is in a three-way tie for the lead among players not on the current top five teams on the leaderboard. The top five teams of the 14 teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, as well as the top individual not on any of those teams.
Manuel is currently tied at 4-under with Adrien Dumont de Chassart of Illinois and Adrian Vagberg of VCU for the coveted individual berth with the final round of the tourney set for Wednesday.
Wake Forest (-21), North Carolina (-20), North Florida (-12), Georgia Southern (-12) and Texas Tech (-10) are the top five teams after Round 2.
Manuel, who had to fight a strong wind on the Yale course Tuesday, was nevertheless a model of consistency, with three birdies and just one bogey. The BIG EAST co-champion opened the round with a birdie and and birdied the par 4 sixth hole and the par 5 16th hole. His only bogey was on the par 4 second. Manuel is the tourney's co-leader in par 5 scoring, playing the holes in 4-under.
The back-to-back 68s give the UConn sophomore 21 rounds of par-or-better out of 35 rounds played and also ups his total of sub-70 rounds to 16 this year. Â
