STORRS – University of Connecticut long snapper Tommy Zozus was announced as a preseason candidate for the Patrick Mannelly Award on Monday.
The award, which is granted to the top FBS senior long snapper and is named after 16-year NFL veteran Patrick Mannelly, includes Zozus and 24 other players across college football.
"The Patrick Mannelly Award is a new vehicle through which football's unsung workhorses can finally bask in the warm glow of appreciation. Now we celebrate the best Long Snappers in college football. And in doing so, we honor the Long Snapper in all of us," the award's official website reads.
Zozus, who transferred to UConn from Florida International University, has appeared in 31 college football games as a long snapper. As a veteran member of the Huskies' special team unit, he brings valuable experience to a UConn team full of up-and-coming talent in college football. His current role has allowed him to truly appreciate the experience.
"It means a lot because I've been in these shoes," said Zozus. "For me, I think it's important, especially as a young freshman coming in or someone that's not as experienced, It's good to help them learn or develop over the years."
While Zozus is proud of the recognition for his abilities on the football field, he's more proud to be with his team and compete on the field, a symbol of his dedication to team success above all else.
"I'm blessed and I'm grateful to be on that watch list," said Zozus. "But I'm looking forward to getting out there with my brothers, working on my team, and having a great season."
