PHILADELPHIA, PA โ The UConn Huskies went on the road and came away with a 34-20 win over the Temple Owls on Saturday afternoon in front of 21,112 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
UConn, now 3-3 on the season and headed into their bye week, got 114 yards rushing and a touchdown from Trey Cornist, his first career 100-yard game. The Huskies finished with 505 yards of total offense on the day, running for 248 and throwing for 257.
Quarterback Kalieb Osborne was 17-of-23 for 257 yards and had a rushing touchdown in the win. Osborne spread the ball around, completing passes to nine different receivers in the win.
The Huskies took the opening kick-off and went 75 yards in just six plays with Osborne capping it off with his sixth rushing touchdown of the season, a 12-yard run, for a 7-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. The Owls answered right and need only one play to do it. QB Ajani Sheppard hit JoJo Bermudez in stride, deep down the middle of the field for a 79-yard touchdown on their first play of the day.
UConn continued their fast start, using just five plays this time to cover the 75-yards as Kenji Christian broke through off right tackle and scampered for a 39-yard touchdown, his second of the season, for a 14-7 lead at 10:18. Temple again had an answer and tied it at 14-14 with 4:43 left in the first. The Owls used some trickery as wide out Colin Chase took a hand off and then hit tight end Peter Clarke on an option pass who took it in for a 29-yard score to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
The Huskies looked to be headed for more points, but a 10-play drive sputtered out at the Temple 10-yard line and Osborne was stopped short on a fourth-and-three attempt to turn the ball over on downs at the end of the first. Temple took advantage and strung together a 12-play drive that covered 82 yards and ate up 7:02 that was capped by a 26-yard Carl Hardin field goal to give the Owls their first lead, 17-14, at 8:13 in the second quarter.
UConn jumped back in front thanks to another quick-strike drive. Cornist saw his first action of the game and set up the Huskies first and goal after ripping off a 51-yard run, his second-longest of the season. Two plays later, Cornist plunged in from a yard out, his third touchdown of the year, to make it 21-17 with 5:55 to go in the half.
The Huskies forced their first turnover of the game with under two minutes to go in the half, halting a Temple drive headed for the red zone. Corner Renick Dorilas pulled the ball free from back Keveun Mason and safety Braedyn Moore pounced on it to give the Huskies the ball at their own 22. On the first play, Cornist ripped off another long run, this time 41-yards to the Temple 37. The Huskies picked-up a fourth-and six to extend the drive as Osborne beat the blitz to hit Shamar Porter down to the one-yard line. The Huskies would have to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Jack O'Connor as the clock expired to lead 24-17 into the half. UConn finished the first half with 373 total yards with Osborne completing 12-of-14 for 193 yards.
The second half was a change of pace for both clubs, as UConn and Temple both punted on their first two possessions. The Owls cracked the scoreboard first as a nine play drive over 61 yards resulted in a 29-yard Hardin field goal to pull Temple withing 24-20 at 2:42 in the third quarter.
The Huskies forced the second Owl turnover in UConn territory to halt a Temple drive early in the fourth quarter. Defensive end Shamar Riser-Pressley came up with a strip sack on a third and one, recovered by K'Von Sherman to give UConn the ball back on their own 38. Osborne took the Huskies down the field and running back Cyncir Bowers ran in from eight yards out to cap a 10-play drive with his sixth score of the season, pushing the UConn lead to 31-20 with 7:52 left in the fourth.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
The UConn defense clamped down from there, forced a three-and-out and got the ball back, ran 5:19 off the clock and put the game out of reach with an O'Connor 27 yard field goal with 1:05 left to seal away the win.
Up Next: The Huskies will have a bye and return to action on Friday, October 23 when they host UMass at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. Game time is 7 pm.
