Four First Half Goals Propel WSOC To 5-0 Road Victory

CHICAGO - The UConn women's soccer team (6-3-4, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) utilized four first half goals to secure its first road victory of the season against DePaul (5-6-2, 1-4-1 BIG EAST), 5-0, on Thursday afternoon from Wish Field.
The UConn offense was clicking early on with Jessica Mazo creating scoring opportunities for her teammates and herself. The senior midfielder found freshman Anaya Johnson for the first goal of the match in the 13th minute and followed it up with a goal of her own in the 23rd minute to double the lead to 2-0.Â
65 second later, junior Abbey Jones notched her third goal of the season on a strike from just outside the box to push the UConn lead to three.
Chloe Landers closed the half, in the 42nd minute, with her second goal of the season to cap the first half scoring at 4-0.
The UConn defense secured its eighth shutout of the season on Thursday and Kaitlyn Mahoney made two saves in just over 77 minutes. MaryKate Ward finished the final 13 minutes to complete the shutout, it was the junior's first regular season match since getting injured during the 2022 campaign.
Freshman Brooke Walonis put a bow on the victory with her second goal of the season, in the 89th minute.Â
UConn secured three key BIG EAST points and now head to Indianapolis for a critical match against Butler on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. ET.Â
