SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UConn men's basketball freshman Stephon Castle (Covington, Ga.) has been named to the 20-player Watch List for the Jerry West Award, presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The award is presented annually to the top shooting guard in Division I men's college basketball.
Castle enters his freshman season at UConn with a world of hype as a consensus top-10 recruit. The rookie has shown the ability to be a three-level scorer and has excellent size for a combo guard at 6-6.
A McDonald's All-American and U18 Team USA gold medalist, Castle averaged over 20 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game as a senior at Newton High School in Covington. He led UConn in scoring on the team's foreign tour this summer, averaging 16.7 points per game in the three contests.
The Naismith Starting Five watch lists are being announced this week. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward) and the Kareem-Abdul Jabbar Award (Center). Castle has been joined on a preseason watch list by fellow Husky Tristen Newton (El Paso, Texas) who is on the Cousy Award list.
