STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team lost to the Vermont Catamounts, 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Vermont took the lead in the 31st minute on an over the top long ball from the Catamounts defense to forward Yaniv Bazini putting him through one on one with UConn's goalkeeper Jayden Hibbert. The Huskies best chance of the first half came in the 20th minute as Eli Conway's header on goal was deflected just over the Catamounts goal.
The Huskies went into the halftime break down a goal but had momentum on the offensive end, leading 5-2 in shots.
UConn carried their offensive urgency into the second half controlling much of the possession, with the Huskies creating ten shots in the half. UConn's Lucas Almeida hit the crossbar in the 71st minute on a beautiful volley inside the box, being denied the equalizer by the woodwork.
Vermont was awarded a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Carter Johnson would convert from the spot, making it 2-0 with just over ten minutes left in the match.
The Huskies continued to throw everything they had at the Catamounts but just could not find the back of the net.
"I thought the effort and intensity was good", said head coach Chris Gbandi. "I thought at times we dominated the game against a very good Vermont team but give them credit they found a way to get a goal and then we had to chase the game."
