WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UConn men's soccer team lost 3-0 to the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies outshot the Hoyas 17-11.
UConn had many chances in the first half to score but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. The first big chance of the game came in the 4th minute as Pierce Bateson played a dangerous ball across the Hoyas box that fell right to Nicolas Tomerius. The sophomore midfielder's shot was cleared off the goal line by a Georgetown defender, denying UConn an early lead.
The Huskies had another great chance in the 21st minute. Tomerius played a great pass to Bateson right in front of the Hoyas goal, but Bateson's shot sailed over the crossbar.
UConn had another great chance right before the halftime whistle, as Lucas Almeida took the ball around the Hoyas goalkeeper, but he sailed his shot over the crossbar. Both teams went into the break scoreless at five shots a piece.
Georgetown came out strong out of the halftime break scoring three unanswered goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half. Maximus Jennings scored the first Hoyas goal in the 51st minute. Marlon Tabora scored Georgetown's final two goals in the 62nd minute and then in the 72nd minute putting the game out of reach for the Huskies.
"I thought the game was a tale of two halves", said head coach Chris Gbandi. "I thought we played well in the first half and created some very good chances; we just couldn't capitalize. In the second half, they (Georgetown) had a few chances that they were able to put away."
