MANCHESTER, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team won 6-1 against Fairfield University in the first home indoor opener of the 2023 season Wednesday afternoon.
UConn would start off slow in doubles play with first and second doubles falling at 6-4, respectively. Third doubles pair, Caroline Cook and Doga Selen Takunyaci would battle in a tiebreaker but would fall short 7-6.
Then, the Huskies would start to gain momentum in singles play. At six singles, Cameron Didion would quickly pull out a 6-0, 6-0 win to get UConn on the board. Shortly after, Isabel Petri Bere and Olivia Wright would end at the same time coming away victorious. Petri Bere took a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles and Wright eased her way to a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles. Aleksandra Karamyshev would then clinch the match making it 4-1 UConn with a 6-1, 7-5 win at third singles.
Maria Constantinou and Cook would find themselves in a tough battle with long rallies in the second set. UConn would fight out the extra two singles points as Constantinou would win 6-2, 7-5 at second singles and Cook would win 7-6, 6-4 at fifth singles.
"This was a nice win over a very good Fairfield team today," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "Our home opener didn't start as well as planned, as our doubles were a little sloppy and had too many unforced errors. This cost us by losing the doubles point. But I'm proud of the team's effort to step up in singles and really focus on the early part of their matches. This fight and focus led us to grab the momentum in most all the singles matches and come through with victories on all six courts."
