Huskies Win First Big East Matchup at Home Over Providence

WINDSOR, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team won 5-2 in their first home indoor Big East matchup against Providence Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies now stand at 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big East Conference.
At the beginning, UConn would be down after dropping the doubles point; but in singles play a sudden rejuvenation would sink in. Maria Constantinou would clinch the match in a nail-biting three-set defeat at second singles with a 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win.
Quickly out of the gate, Aleksandra Karamyshev would ease her way to a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles. Soon after, Isabel Petri Bere finished with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Denise Lai would step in to sixth singles winning in straight sets at 6-1, 6-1 after Olivia Wright fell short in a second set tiebreak. With the Huskies up 3-2 in the match score, Constantinou would ring in the fourth singles point to clinch the match.
Caroline Cook also battled in her match after dropping the first tiebreak at fifth singles to then pull away with a 6-1, 6-1 second and third set.
"This was a nice win today over a tough Providence team," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "We dug ourselves a hole by losing the doubles point, but we responded nicely in our singles matches. Aleks and Isabel came out quickly and played well with straight set wins to set the tone early. Olivia lost a tightly contested match, but Denise stepped up for a great win at six singles to put us up 3-2 in the match. Our last two matches both went three sets, but Caroline and Maria both came through with solid victories. I was very pleased that we responded so well in singles today. It put our toughness to the test, and we came through in the end."
