UConn Falls to Sacred Heart at Home

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team fell to Sacred Heart by a score of 5-2 Wednesday afternoon.
The Huskies have struggled with injuries as of late leading to a five-match losing streak. With the loss, UConn stands at 7-7 overall. Sacred Heart improves to 12-4 overall.
The Huskies battled until the very end while dealing with lineup changes. At six singles, Cameron Didion lost by default due to injury. Then, at fifth singles, Caroline Cook would retire in the second set giving Sacred Heart two points on the match score.
However, UConn would keep fighting hard. Maria Constantinou would go 2-0 on the day in doubles and singles. The Huskies would earn the doubles point winning two of three at second and third doubles. Third doubles pair, Denise Lai and Doga Selen Takunyaci, and second doubles pair, Constantinou and Cook, both won 6-4.
Constantinou would add to her impressive performance and win in straight sets at first singles taking a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
"This was a tough match today with a good Sacred Heart team," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "We had a nice start with winning the doubles point. Then, due to multiple injuries we had to default at five and six singles. Players had to move to different positions, but gave their best. Maria had a great day stepping up to number one singles with a nice win. Hopefully we can get a little more healthy heading into the upcoming matches."
Up next the Huskies will go into senior day weekend with a home match on Saturday against Villanova at 1:30 p.m. EST and then a senior day match on Sunday against Georgetown at 11 a.m. EST in Storrs, Conn.
