Boston, Mass. -Â Â Â The UConn Huskies fell to the Boston College Eagles Friday night by a final of 5-3. The Huskies held a one goal lead heading into the third period, but back-back goals and an eventual empty netter sunk the Huskies.Â
UConn started the game out strong controlling the puck and holding a 9-2 edge for shots on goal. Although UConn held the edge with shots on goal, Boston College got on the board first as tic tac toe passing on the rush resulted in a goal with 8 minutes left in the first period. From there the Eagles took control continuing to pepper sophomore goaltender Logan Terness with shots as they looked for their second but were denied. Towards the tail end of the first period, a boarding penalty on freshman Jake Percival was upgraded to major penalty forcing UConn to start the second period on the penalty kill trailing 1-0. Â
The Huskies penalty kill remained strong as they started the period by killing off the remainder of Jake Percival's five-minute major. From there, the UConn offense went to work. The Huskies tied the game early in the first period as Tabor Heaslip collected the puck at center ice and dished it to Tristan Fraser who centered a puck and found a streaking Jake Veilleux for the tip in. Shortly after while on the power play, Ryan Tverberg took the puck at the point and fired it past Boston College netminder Mitch Benson for the goal.Â
The Eagles did not back down as Logan Terness was caught out of position but made a diving glove save to hold the Eagles at one goal. Boston College eventually found the equalizer midway through the period but while on another power play, UConn regained the lead as Hudson Schandor fired a pass to Samu Salminen who tipped it in to give UConn the 3-2 lead heading into the period break. Â
In a back-and-forth 3rd period with both teams threatening to score, Boston College struck first to tie the game at 3. The Eagles didn't stop there as they scored another only two minutes later to take the 4-3 lead. With the one goal lead, Boston College limited UConn's puck possession and prevented the Huskies from tying the game. With Terness pulled for an extra skater, Matthew Wood was left alone with a chance to tie the game, but the Boston College defender slid across to block the shot. From there the Eagles would score an empty netter to seal the game and take home the 5-3 victory.Â
