Mahamed Sharif Competes at Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend

STORRS, Conn. - The junior mid-distance runner from Westbrook, Maine, Mahamed Sharif, competes in the 2023 Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday and Saturday. Â
Sharif qualified for nationals after running a program best 1:46.96 in the Indoor 800 meters at the NCAA Last Chance Qualifiers in Boston. The last time a UConn male athlete qualified for the Indoor Nationals was back in 2014 when Alvaro Chavez also qualified for the 800 meters with a 1:47.96 time. Â
There will be two preliminary heats with the top three and the next two fastest runners advancing to the Final on Saturday. Sharif is slated to run in the second heat on Friday.Â
"I'm super proud of Mahamed," Track & Field Director Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "He's worked extremely hard for this and I'm excited to see him compete at Nationals."Â
ESPN+ will be streaming the championships on both days with an early session and late session. Sharif will be running during the late session at 9:45 p.m. EST and 7:45 p.m. MST on Friday. If he advances to Saturday, he is scheduled to run at 9:30 p.m. EST. Catch all the action this weekend on ESPN+.Â
