STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team was clipped by Georgetown 4-3 in a Big East matchup on senior day Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies are now 8-8 overall and 2-3 in Big East play. Georgetown improves to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Many tight matches were featured in today's face off with three close third set matches. Georgetown would take the doubles point at first and second doubles. Maria Constantinou would go for another 2-0 day winning in doubles and singles for back-to-back matches against Villanova and now Georgetown. Constantinou and third doubles partner, Doga Selen Takunyaci won 7-5 and then Constantinou pulled out a three-set defeat at first singles going 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Aleksandra Karamyshev would cruise to a victory in straight sets at second singles winning 6-0, 6-2.
Then, the match came down to third and fourth singles. Cameron Didion and Isabel Petri Bere would both go to a third set and look to secure the win. Didion at fourth singles after losing in a first set tiebreak would win the next two sets, winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3. Petri Bere would fight hard as she took the first set in a tiebreak, winning 7-6 (7-5). However, even with the strong effort coming back in the third set being down 4-0, Petri Bere fell short of the win dropping the second and third set 6-4, 6-3.
Although the Huskies came up just short, there would be much to celebrate and be proud about, especially with the honoring of the four graduating seniors.
"This was a tough conference match today with Georgetown," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "It was the closest match we have played all spring. Unfortunately we came up just a few points short in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss. But we fought tough on every court, and left everything out there today. We had nice singles wins today from Maria, Aleks, and Cameron. Maria was a winner in singles, and also doubles, with one of our seniors, Selen. Before the match we celebrated our four outstanding seniors on the team with a nice ceremony. Denise, Kyra, Selen, and Caroline have been outstanding student athletes for our program. I am extremely proud of all that they accomplished during our time together."
Next up the Huskies face Xavier in another Big East matchup at 1 p.m. EST in Cincinatti, Ohio.
