Indianapolis, Ind. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team split the back-to-back road trip in Big East Conference action falling 6-1 against Xavier on Friday and then taking a 5-2 win over Butler Saturday afternoon.
Although splitting the two matches this weekend, the Huskies still remain at .500 overall with a 9-9 record. In conference play, UConn is 3-4.
In the first matchup against the top-seeded Xavier (10-7 OVR, 2-0 BE), Xavier came out firing. However, UConn held strong in doubles play, coming up just a hair short of taking the doubles point. At third doubles, Doga Selen Takunyaci and Maria Constantinou would cruise to a 6-1 win. Then, at second doubles, Isabel Petri Bere and Aleksandra Karamyshev would fall just short in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3).
In singles play, Karamyshev led the way at second singles winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Also, Cameron Didion would force a third set super tiebreak in a close match, but would be clipped 1-6, 7-5, 4-10.
"This was a competitive match with the top-seeded team in the conference," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. We were just a few points from winning the doubles point. Selen and Maria had a nice win at #3, and Isabel and Aleksandra lost in a tiebreaker. In singles, we had a great win by Aleks at #2. We also had several other close singles matches, but they were a little tougher than us today."
In the second conference matchup this weekend against Butler (9-11 OVR, 3-2 BE), the Huskies came up on the other side to pull out a win in yet another competitive match.
UConn would get off to a strong start in doubles winning at second and third doubles. Second doubles pair, Denise Lai and Didion took a 6-1 win. Then, at third doubles, Constantinou and Takunyaci won a close one going 6-4.
Four singles players would win in straight sets including the clinch by Didion at fourth singles. Didion would go on to take a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Constantinou at the top spot in singles rattled off a 6-2, 6-1 win. Then, Karamyshev would win her second singles match of the two-match road trip going 6-1, 6-2. Caroline Cook would then ring in the extra singles point, 6-3, 6-3.
"This was a great win today over a very good conference opponent," Marshall said. "The team was focused and ready to go today, and it showed in doubles. We had solid wins at #2 and #3 doubles to secure the doubles point. In singles we came out strong on all courts, winning the first set on courts 1-4. Maria had a great win at #1, and Aleks came up strong right after her to give us our third point. Cameron clinched the match with a solid win at #4 singles. Caroline gave us the fifth point, while Denise battled but lost in a third set tiebreaker. Our seniors led the way today, as all of them had a win in singles or doubles. I am very proud of the fight and determination we showed today, it was a nice win for our program."
Next up the Huskies will take on their last regular season opponent against UMass at 2:30 p.m. EST in Amherst, Mass.
