CHICAGO, Ill. – The UConn softball team (31-11) travels to DePaul (12-29) this weekend to close out their BIG EAST regular season slate. The Huskies are atop the BIG EAST standings at 18-3, with only two weeks left in the regular season.
UConn is playing their best softball of the season, winners in fourteen of their last fifteen games, including four straight BIG EAST series sweeps. In this stretch, UConn has outscored their opponents, 88-30, hitting .319 as a team, with six Huskies hitting over .300. Sophomore outfielder, Lexi Hastings has led the Huskies at the plate, holding an impressive slash line of .520/.880/.586, with four home runs and thirteen runs batted in during this fifteen game stretch. Hastings leads the conference in runs scored (43) and stolen bases (31) this season.
The Huskies pitching staff has been led by freshman Hope Jenkins and junior Payton Kinney this season. The two combined hold 187 of UConn's 251 strikeouts this season, holding a 24-7 record. Senior Meghan O'Neil has emerged as a dominant reliever for the Huskies picking up seven saves in the last fifteen games, putting her at eight saves this season, which ranks second in the country.
DePaul is coming into the weekend on a nine game skid, having lost their past three BIG EAST series. The Blue Demons were picked to finish in first place in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' poll this year but are currently in last place in the standings at 4-14. The last time these two programs met was in last year's BIG EAST Tournament, where UConn eliminated DePaul moving on to the BIG EAST Championship game.
The series opener is set for Friday at 3:00pm EST. Saturday's game will be broadcasted on FS2 starting at 4:00pm EST. The series finale will be on Sunday at 1:00pm EST. Friday and Sunday's games will be streamed on FloSports.
