UConn Wraps Up Regular Season at Yale Springtime Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Connecticut track & field teams displayed strong performances closing out a successful weekend and regular season at the Yale Invitational Sunday afternoon. Â
With great results at the Penn Relays, UConn was also well-represented at the Yale Invitational. Additionally, highlighting the weekend was Mahamed Sharif as he competed in the 800 meters at the Virginia High Performance hosted by University of Virginia and would finish with an outdoor personal best taking second overall running a time of 1:48.73. That time positions him well for the NCAA First Rounds.Â
In the Yale Springtime Invitational competition, there were 11 first place finishes along with seven personal records that placed in the top five. On the men's side, Jack Foster broke his personal best in the discus with a first-place mark of 48.01m. Foster also took second in the shot put with a mark of 15.54m. Patrick Oatman took first with a personal best mark of 4.91m. On the track, William Watson placed first in the 110-meter hurdles, breaking his personal best time at 14.82 seconds. Also, Stephen Sutton earned his season best in the 800 claiming first with a time of 1:54.09.Â
For the women, UConn took 1,2, and 3 in the pole vault as Sofia Wittmann broke her personal record with a mark of 3.87m. Then, Rachel Mason took second vaulting 3.65m and Mallory Malz finished third with a 3.35m result. Â
Also, on the track, Jaia James put on strong performances at Yale as she earned a personal best in the 100 meters running a first-place time of 12.15 seconds. James also placed first in the 200 meters with a time of 25.42. Â
"We did a great job competing and putting ourselves in a position for the postseason," Director of Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "With the last day of the regular season, we'll move into Big East Championships in two weeks."
The Huskies look ahead to the Men's and Women's Big East Championships set to get underway on Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13 hosted by Villanova in Philadelphia.Â
