STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 2-1 on a chilly night at Burrill Family Field. Freshman Savannah Ring delivered the big hit for the Huskies, hitting her first career home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, edging UConn past St. John's.
Hope Jenkins got her 15th start of the season for the Huskies, tossing a gem for the Huskies, only allowing two hits in six innings pitched. The one blemish came in the first inning, giving up a solo home run to London Jarrard. Jenkins was unhittable after that, retiring seventeen of the last nineteen batters she faced. She finished with seven strikeouts, earning her team high tenth win of the season.
The Huskies tied the game at one in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing off a St. John's error that allowed Taylor Zatyk to come around and score from second base off a Lexi Hastings hard hit ball.
The game was a pitcher's duel for the next three innings, with both teams only tallying one hit combined.
Ring broke the deadlock at one, hitting a blast into the left field bullpen, giving the Huskies the lead for good.
Meghan O'Neil came in relief for Jenkins, closing out the win for the Huskies, and earning her fourth save of the season.
Game two is set for 1:00pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets are available HERE.
