UConn With Strong Results at Hurricane Invitational and UMass Flagship Meet

Hurricane Invitational Final Results | UMass Flagship Opener Final ResultsÂ
Miami, Fla. - The University of Connecticut track & field teams finished strong this weekend at the Hurricane Invitational and the UMass Flagship Opener in Amherst, Mass.Â
Overall, UConn put up great performances. The Huskies divided in two to take on the main Hurricane Invitational meet Friday and Saturday; and the nearby secondary invitational meet at UMass on Saturday in Amherst.Â
The weekend featured 42 total top-five finishes from both the men and women including 15 personal records. In Miami, the men found great success. Joseph O'Brien ran a personal best of 21.01 seconds, placing fifth in the 200 meters. Also, finishing with a strong result were Jack Foster in the Shot Put and Alex Krause in the Hammer Throw. Foster threw a personal best of 16.14 meters, taking third place, and Krause broke a personal best, throwing 57.26 meters in the Hammer Throw and securing third place.Â
In Amherst, the second group of men also came up successful. Anish Rajamanickam would break a personal best in the 400 meters, winning the event with a time of 49.11 seconds. Then, Connor Hayford threw a personal best in the javelin throw with a mark of 61.19 meters, taking second place. Â
On the women's side, more notable performances were displayed. In Miami, Emily Lavarnway and Katelyn Reid put on a show in the Women's Heptathlon. Both multi-event athletes would break a personal best in total score. Lavarnway topped the leaderboard tacking on 5,395 points. Â Reid placed fifth with a personal best total score of 4,760 points.Â
To add to the strong performances in Miami, Jenna Zydanowicz broke a personal record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:21.95 placing second. Then, right behind Zydanowicz in the event was Chloe Thomas as Thomas would finish in 4:22.16, placing third. Â
The second group of women also toughed it out in Amherst with key highlights. First year Mia Dansby would top the leaderboard in the 100 meters and the 200 meters. Dansby broke a personal record in the 100 running it in 12.11Â seconds and would finish the 200 with a time of 25.11. Caitlin Dumouchel in the javelin throw would also break a personal best with a throw of 40.87 meters, placing second. Â
"We have had some really good competition and we took advantage of the opportunity when it was presented to us," Director of Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We're still rusty making some early season mistakes but these kids are really good at cleaning those things up and staying committed. So, as we move into championship month in May, we'll be ready to go."Â
 Next up the Huskies host the Northeast Challenge for a two-day meet on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs. Â
