STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team (34-13) beat the St. John's Red Storm, 3-2 in the Huskies opening game of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Hope Jenkins got the start in the circle earning her team high 15^th win of the season, going three innings, striking out six Red Storm hitters.

UConn jumped out to an early two run lead in the first inning. After the first two hitters in Lexi Hastings and Aziah James reached base safely, Jana Sanden brought home Hastings on an infield single. Rosie Garcia brought James in from third base on a single to center field, making it 2-0 Huskies.

The only blemish of the day for Jenkins came in the second inning, as Sydney Totarsky of St. John's hit a two run home run to even the score at two.

The Huskies responded in the bottom half of the second inning, taking the lead for good. Grace Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Zatyk, making it 3-2 Huskies.

Payton Kinney came in relief for Jenkins in the fourth inning, tossing a dominant three innings, with six strikeouts, only surrendering one hit.

Meghan O'Neil came in to close out the win for the Huskies in the seventh inning, earning her ninth save of the season and sending the Huskies to the BIG EAST Tournament Semi-Final.
